Leger
The University of Western Ontario has always had a strong tradition of endeavouring to facilitate the acquisition and refinement of public speaking skills through debate. As the oldest accredited club on campus the Western Debating Society is not only established but well supported at the university.
The University of Western Ontario’s Debate Society continues in its dedication towards team development. Leger is an excellent opportunity to enhance our team’s ability and to re-establish Western-hosted tournaments as the premier opportunity for competitive debate and more importantly for a highly entertaining weekend.
Leger 2010
Leger will be held from February 26th to February 28th 2010
Style:
The tournament will be held in squirrelable Canadian Parliamentary style with points of information. The first two rounds will have open adjudication. There will be five rounds, six if numbers warrant, and a break to quarterfinals. There will be a novice final if there are sufficient novice teams. There will be trophies for the top 8 teams, top two novice teams, top ten speakers, top novice speaker, and the top five public speakers.
Judging:
Judging will be a 15 minute conferral and a panel vote. The first two rounds will be open adjudication. Judging will be provided by the UWO debating society’s approximately 25 active members as well as external judges. We will have an n/2 judging requirement (rounded down) and there will be a discount for experienced judges. The UWODS has an active membership of 25-30 members, as well as a larger pool of experienced judges within the Western community. We feel that we will be able to provide a judging pool consistent with the depth that is expected of Leger.
Registration:
The registration fee will be no higher than $120 per team and $60 per judge. This includes no sources of external and internal fundraising we are actively pursuing, nor any volume discounts we hope to obtain. We believe that we will be able to lower this, however cannot commit to a lower price this far in advance.
Tabs:
The tournament will be power-bracketed using ChuTabs, with the first round randomly assigned and school protected. We will pull-up the bottom team, with no team being pulled up more than once, or hitting the pull-up more than once.
Food:
All meals from Friday dinner to Sunday lunch will be provided, including a buffet banquet at the Wave and a Sunday morning homemade pancake breakfast.
Socials:
Socials are yet to be determined but will be available to all ages and will include a pub/club type outing. They will likely include a martini bar.
Public Speaking:
Public speaking will be run by Leonard Loewith using standard public speaking policies. Three rounds of public speaking will be held.
Accommodation:
Limited billeting will be offered on a first come first serve basis. We are pursuing a hotel deal. The cost for a quad occupancy is likely to be $110/night, and located close to Western. For those of you who don’t wish to walk to campus, free parking is available on campus.
Location:
All debating will take place within the University of Western Ontario within the Social Science Centre and University College, buildings that are adjacent to each other on campus. The final round will be held in Conron Hall, the historic home of the UWO Debating Society, for a picture see Wikipedia.
Equity:
An equity policy will be posted a month prior to the tournament.
