UWO Debating Society

High School

The UWODS is pleased to invite you to the 2009 UWO High School Canadian Parliamentary Debating Championships! The tournament will be held on the beautiful UWO campus and will run from Friday, November 27th until Saturday, November 28th.

Style:
The tournament will begin on Friday night with two rounds of Canadian Parliamentary style debate, on the prepared topic listed below. This will be followed on Saturday by three rounds of Canadian Parliamentary style where students will be offered both a straight and squirrelable resolution. It will be the responsibility of the Government team to decide if they'd like to run the straight resolution as it stands, or use the squirrelable resolution as a stepping stone to introduce a case of their own. As both straight and squirrleable topics are commonly used in Canadian Parliamentary university debating, exposure to these styles in high school will bring significant benefit for future years of debating. To avoid any possible confusion, please consult our complete tournament style guide.

After the 5 preliminary rounds of debate, the tournament will break to Semi-Finals on Saturday afternoon. The Semi-Finals and Finals will also be of the straight/squirrelable nature. Trophies will be awarded to the top 8 teams overall, the top Junior team, the top 10 speakers overall and the top Junior speaker.

Prepared Topic:

The prepared topic for Friday evening's rounds of debate will be:

THBT the Government Has the Right to Place Restrictions on Executive Bonuses Given out by Financial Institutions.

Judging:

The majority of judges will be current UWO Debating Society members.  A number of UWO Debating Alumni have also volunteered their time and expertise to assist with adjudicating. Furthermore, we are in communication with the University of Toronto, Wilfred Laurier University and the University of Waterloo to send some of their most qualified debaters to assist throughout the weekend.   It is one of our main goals at this tournament to ensure that students consistently receive thorough, useful feedback that will facilitate improvement for future rounds and years of debating.

Registration:
The registration fee will be $100 per team of two debaters with a $50 deposit required by the registration deadline of Thursday, November 12, 2009. A registration form should be included with the payment so the UWO Debating Society is aware of the number of teams each school will be sending and will have sufficient coach information. All cheques should be made payable to the “UWO Debating Society” and mailed to:
